A New Year’s Resolution

December 26, 2007 on 8:40 pm | In Habits |

Every single year, just before January 1st or just after, we make plans what we are going to change in our lives in the coming year. We want to lose weight, exercise more, quit smoking, earn more money, get a better job, study more, get that car or that house…or whatever it is that we want. Very often we make a New Year’s Resolution and somehow the things we want, do not happen. We start every year promising ourselves that this time we are really going to do it. And we are doing it for a while and then…somehow…we are not sure why things start to slide down and our excitement about improvement gets lower and lower and we fall into the same trap. We are back to the old thing. Why?
The answer is very simple. What stops us in our tracks are our old habits. The habits that controlled us for our entire life are controlling us now as well. We want to do well, we plan to do well and we start well, but until we change those habits nothing is going to change in our lives. Very often we underestimate the power of our habits. They are so powerful and they virtually control every move we make. As an example, this morning when you went to your bathroom and picked up your toothbrush, you did not try to figure out what to do with it. You automatically started to brush your teeth. The same happened when you went to get dressed. You did not think how to put your clothes on, you only picked up what you wanted to wear and then you put them on, not giving a single thought that your legs go into trousers instead of arms. It was automatic. The same way you drive your car.. and the same way different areas of our lives are controlled by our habits.
So, for us to be able to change anything in our lives in 2008 we have to change our habits first.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
What are you going to do about it?

The best Thought Mail in last month ( the one that got  the most “Thank you” emails) is:
“Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid, by saying nothing, doing nothing and being nothing.”

P.S.
Let’s trip over, take a wrong turn or catch a tiny fish. This way we know we are going somewhere. Those are the lessons of life and we can not get them and learn from them, if we stay were we are.

  1. I resolve to make new goals each month and break them into smaller accomplishable pieces. I want to continue to examine my life and my situations and find the best in each new challenge. I know that each time I hit a new obstacle I will find a way around it and learn from it. I resolve to stay optimistic and to expect the best outcomes.
I resolve to make 2008 absolutely awesome! It will be mind blowing. When I look back at 2007 I can see so many dramatic changes in my life, 2008 will see many of the seeds I have planted come to fuition. I can’t wait to enjoy my beautiful “garden”.
